Rev. Vandell Davis was born Apr. 23, 1946 in Mullins, SC to William Davis and Maebelle Leonard. He came from a large family of 10 siblings. He grew up in a Christian home attended church on a regular basis.
He was drafted into the army out of high school. He completed his education in the service with a GED. After serving in Vietnam, he returned home and completed his education at Friendship Jr. College, Barber Scotia College and the University of South Carolina with a degree in Sociology and a Master Degree in Education and Administration. While at Barber Scotia, he joined the fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc.
In 1973 he married Maude Dewese, a native of Winnsboro, SC. He joined Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. The Davis’s were married for 48 years and blessed with two children, Andrew Phillip and Pamela Elizabeth. Rev. Davis worked as management with Parks Recreation and Tourism until his retirement. He also taught Science at Buford Elementary School and Great Falls Middle School. In 2003, Rev. Davis received God’s call to the ministry and was licensed and ordained as a minister at Wayman AME for several years. He also pastored at Ebenezer AME Church in Greenbrier and then Friendship Church in Dawkins.
He was on the following boards and committees: Fairfield County School Board (member and Chairman), Social Service Community Involvement, Downtown Development Board, Barber Scotia College of Trustees, Adoption Agency, Fairfield County NAACP, and Guardian Ad Litem Agency.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Maude Davis, son, Phillip Davis (Ashley), daughter, Pamela Davis and grandchildren, Penelope Davis, Christian Pearson, Xavier Brown, and Camille Millner. He also leaves behind sisters, brothers, sister in-laws, brother in-laws, nieces, nephews, family, friends and community members. He was a loving and caring person that will truly be missed.
Funeral service will be 2 pm Wednesday May 4, 2022 @ Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 pm to 6 pm Tuesday May 3, 2022 @ Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro SC 29180.
