Obituary

Mrs. Valeria Elaine Young Butler affectionately known as E-mom, was born on August 27th, 1936, in Blair, SC, and peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, at the age of 85. She was the daughter of the late Heck Young Sr. and the late Sonnie McDuffie Young.

She was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County where she enjoyed learning and playing basketball. She was one of the first women to become a school bus driver for the local county school system.

After High School she moved to Philadelphia, PA where she met her first husband Bradley H. Smith and from this union, three daughters were born Denise, Theresa, and Valerita. They made a home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey where they joined Second Baptist Church of Moorestown New Jersey.  She enjoyed sewing, decorating and taking care of the children.  She then went to work for the Cherry Hill public school system as a bus operator before taking a job with New Jersey Transit where she worked for over twenty years and was highly recognized for her exceptional performance before retiring.

She married Albert Butler and moved to Jacksonville, Florida after retirement and became a faithful member of St. Paul AME church.  She assisted part time at a day care center nurturing children and was a care giver for a single mother in her community.  She created a handmade clothing line called “You’ve Seen The Rest Now Take The Best, By Elaine” for her family and friends to enjoy.  She hosted many holiday events throughout the years that gathered the family for fellowship and fun.

She loved being around her family and friends just as much as they loved being around her. She shared the best stories that will be cherished forever. She was kind, smart, loving, witty and just a joy to be around.

She was preceded in death by her parents Heck Young Sr. and Sonnie Young, husbands Bradley H. Smith, Albert Butler, daughter Theresa Ingram, sister Betty Jean Young Douglas, and brothers Heck Young Jr and Rufus Young.

Those who will forever cherish the beautiful memories are her children Denise and Valerita, six grandchildren: Tiffany, Wayne Jr, Ashlee’, Areana, Whitnee and Alexander, five great grandchildren: Alana, Aubrelle, Tyrone IV, Eric Jr and Amina, sister in Christ Dorothy, God daughter Kim, and a host of fabulous nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted relatives and friends.

She had a kind heart, gave great advice and shared all the family news.  She had such a wonderful sense of humor that brought smiles to the faces around her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

WE LOVE YOU EMOM
