Mrs. Lillian Berniece Martin Boykin departed her earthly life on June 29, 2024 at MUSC Health Emergency Room located in Winnsboro, SC. She was born on September 14, 1954 and was the fourth child out of six born to the late Mr. Marion W. Martin, Sr. and Mrs. Hattie Bell Squirewell Martin.
Lillian became a member of St. Mark Baptist Church at the age of 10 years old and has worked in various auxiliaries over the years to include the musical choir, usher board, assistant church secretary and Sunday School secretary. One of her fondest memories was working as a missionary under the leadership of her mother. She is affectionately known as Berniece and her father nicknamed her Pie.
In 1972, Lillian graduated from Winnsboro High School in Winnsboro. After finishing high school she was employed by Charm Corporation in Ridgeway, South Carolina for twelve years. A few years later she began working at Tanglewood Nursing Home as a nursing assistant and remained in that role for three years. She found her calling when she began to work at the South Carolina Department for Special Needs at Midlands Center as a Human Service Assistant. She worked there for twenty-five years until her health started to decline in 2012. She retired in 2012.
Lillian married James Robert Boykin at the age of 22 on December 3, 1976. They were married for forty-seven years. Although Lillian did not have any children of her own, she was the proud Godmother for oldest niece, Dr. Tammy F. Martin and her nephews Mr. William Leon Martin Jr. and Mr. Andre Nathanial Hennie Jr. She had much love for her family especially her brothers and her younger sister, Brenda. She enjoyed traveling to family reunions, trying out new recipes as well as baking her Red Velvet and Vanilla Pound Cakes. She loved playing Scrabble and word games. Lillian had a distinct smile and would press her way to church even when she did not feel her best.
She leaves cherish her memories, her husband, Mr. James Robert Boykin; three brothers, Mr. William L. Martin Sr. (Linda), Mr. David C. Martin (Yvonne), Louis G. Martin (Elizabeth); one sister, Mrs. Brenda M. Hennie; one goddaughter, Dr. Tammy F. Martin; two godsons, Mr. William L. Martin Jr. and Mr. Andre Nathaniel Hennie Jr.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Geraldine E. Martin and one brother-in-law, Mr. Ronald Boykin (Gwendolyn); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her dear brother Mr. Marion W. Martin Jr.; father-in-law, Mr. James Boykin; mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Maple Boykin, two brother-in-laws,
Mr. Andre Hennie Sr. and Mr. Willie Bradford Boykin; as well as a host of maternal and paternal aunts and uncles.
Services for Mrs. Lillian Martin Boykin will be 11 am Friday July 5, 2024 @ St. Mark Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be no viewing.
All visitations will be at The Martin residence, 4413 State Hwy 34 E Ridgeway SC 29130from 1 pm to 7 pm.
