Mrs. Bertha McCants Obituary

Our Matriarch

An Earthly Life's Summary

Mrs. Bertha Lee Ferby McCants made her earthly debut on September 22, 1931 as the daughter of the late Dave and Mattie Anderson Ferby along with Lizzie Ferby. She was reared into adulthood by her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Alberta Anderson, from the age of eight upon the passing of her mother.

This Godly Matriarch of the McCants Family was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County. Her adult life’s journey began by becoming the bride of the late John Buchanan McCants, Sr. A diligent and hard working female, she succeeded in rearing her family while being gainfully employed and a domestic worker and machine operator at the Uniroyal Textile Company. Medical retirement ensued from the latter place of employment. Spirituality and the love of God was a major focus of her being. She became a member of the Blackjack Baptist Church at a very early age. Members of the family were enthralled by the stories of her earthly childhood, particularly of the one of she and her friends riding to church on a Sunday morning on the back of a horse pulled wagon. The St. Luke Baptist Church became her home of worship later in life. Her faithful service entailed membership on the Jubilee Choir, Pastor’s Aide and Missionary Ministries. Her duties were unwavering and undaunting until her physical health failed.

Collecting photos of family, friends and neighbors was her passion. If you needed a “picture” as she called them, she was the go person. “Mama, Grandma Bert, Granny, Gamma, Ma Bert”, were just a sampling of the many names she answered to. Faithful Woman of God was the name heard when she was called to her heavenly home by the Master.

She leaves to relish and cherish her memory, a daughter, Mrs. Mattie McCants Ashford of Winnsboro, SC, sons James (Mildred) McCants of Winnsboro, SC and John (Linda) McCants, Jr. of Winston Salem, NC, Lewis D. Ferby of Concord, NC and Daisy Rogers of Philadelphia, PA are her surviving sisters. Mrs. Dorothy McCants of Winnsboro, SC and Mrs. Gecora (John) Crumblin of Fort Walton Beach, Florida are sister-in-laws that she loved dearly and they, her. Twelve first generation grandchildren produced numerous great grands, and great-great grandchildren. They are proud to make up her lineage.

Preceding her in the passage to everlasting peace, were mother and father, her eldest son, Freddie Ferby, youngest of the five children, daughter, Rosemary McCants Brown, Andrea Ferby, granddaughter, whom she reared from a toddler. Great Granddaughter, Baby Destiny Brown, and Great Great Grandson, Baby Ayden Ferby. Brother, Davie Ferby, Sisters, Elizabeth Langston and Bobbie Lea also made the transition prior to her calling.

Funeral service will be 12 noon Tuesday November 29, 2022 at St. Luke Baptist Church, 183 St. Luke Church Rd. Winnsboro, SC 29180. Visitation will be from 3 pm to 5:30 pm Monday November 28, 2022 at Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro, SC 29180.
