Clyde Martin Sr. departed this life on Thursday, January 17, 2019. He was born on August 11, 1936 in Monticello, SC to the late Moses Martin and the late Kittie Lee (Thompson) Martin. He moved to Martin Road when he was two years old and spent his whole life there. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, the late Dorothy (Peay) Martin and their oldest daughter, Jennifer “Sister” Martin. He retired in 2001 after more than thirty years working alongside his brothers for Martin Brothers Logging.
He leaves to cherish his memory - their legacy of seven sons (Clyde Jr., Steven, Elvis Wayne, Calvin, Brian, Preston and Jermaine); three daughters (Cindy Sanders, Tammy Martin and Canisha Beck); 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is survived by one sister, Evelyn (Jeff) Himes of Columbia, SC; three brothers: Henry (Minnie) Martin; Frank Martin; and Heyward (Georgetta) Martin, all of Winnsboro, SC and their families. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Fedward (Yvonne) Martin and Otto (Irene) Martin.
Daddy was the strong, quiet type. He said that Mama talked enough for both of them. He loved his children. He was particularly fond of his grandkids and great grandkids and had nicknames for all of them. He loved to watch Sanford & Son and The Andy Griffith Show on television. He had a knack for auto mechanics and made sure to take care of the many vehicles that found their way into the yard. He could frequently be found in his favorite spot - sitting under his sycamore tree with his brothers.
Our family cannot express the extent of our gratitude for the outpouring of love and support we have received. From flowers, donations, meals and fellowship, to the stories that have lifted our spirits, we are forever grateful. We are saddened to have lost our patriarch, our father, our grandfather and the last of our parents who met over 60 years ago on Gully Street and began their legacy, but are comforted knowing that they are together again.
Services for Mr. Clyde Martin Sr. of 810 Martin Rd. Winnsboro SC 29180 will be 1:00pm (12 noon viewing) Saturday January 26, 2019 @ Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2508 Camp Welfare Rd. Winnsboro SC 29180. Visitation will be Friday January 25, 2019 from 1pm to 7pm @ Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro SC 29180.
