Deacon Elijah McCorkle was born on Jan. 26, 1941, to the late Osborne and Marie Green McCorkle. He departed this life on Aug. 13, 2022.
Elijah was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County. After high school, he went on to serve with the United States Army. He attended Columbia Commercial College and is a graduate of Patterson Barber School. He retired from SCE&G in 1994, after 28 years as a Supervisor in the Gas Department. He was the first black supervisor, since reconstruction. Elijah accepted Christ at an early age. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church of Ridgeway and served as a Deacon for well over 50 years. He organized and sang with the Southernaires of Columbia for 54 years. He also served as V.P. of the Quartet Group Ministries. He was also a founding Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church of Blythewood, under the leadership of the late James L. Davis.
Elijah is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mozell W. McCorkle; one daughter, Deidre McCorkle of Ridgeway; one son Elijah (Tina) McCorkle of Ridgeway; one brother Clarence (Zelma) McCorkle of Blythewood; one sister Milvet Adkins of California; 6 grandchildren, Crystal (Marvin) Kennedy, Quentin, Jasmine, Je'Rel, Vanessa, and Andrew; 8 great -grands, Me’Liyah, Ma’Laysia, Skylah, Mia, Marvin, Laylah, Josiah, and Mylah; Mother –in -Law Naomi Waden; Son –in -Law Melvin Goins; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, family and friends that loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by one daughter Beverly M. Goins; 5 sisters - Mary Gist, Susie Bates, Annie Mae Richardson, Lydia Pennington, and Sammie Bell Jackson; 6 brothers - Daniel, Moses, Aaron, Amon, Raymond, and Marion McCorkle.
Funeral service will be1 pm Saturday August 20, 2022 @ Bethlehem Baptist Family Life Center, 1037 Eastman St. Columbia SC 29203 with burial @ Memorial Gardens of Columbia SC, 9301 Wilson Blvd Columbia SC. Visitation will be Friday August 19, 2022 from 12 noon to 6 pm @ Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro SC 29180.
The family will receive family and friends @ the residence from 1 pm to 7 pm daily until the service.
